This major Pueblo Indian ruins site is all that remains of an Anasazi Indian culture so significant that archaeologists refer to it as "The Chaco Phenomena". A distinctive type of fine masonry was developed here that was unrivaled anywhere North of Mexico. They were a sun-watching people who developed through observations, shadow-on-rock devices known as sun daggers, which accurately indicated the soistices and equinoxes. Signal towers and kivas aligned along the meridian are still evident and were probably used to announce the seasonal change. Ancient roadbeds to distant outlier sites still exist. The road to Chaco Canyon is no less spectacular as it passes through the village of Abiquiu, brushes past the Jemez Mountains with its volcanic features and skirts the Colorado Plateau with cliffs of well defined and multi-colored layers of earth.
