Situated between the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Rio Grande Gorge, Taos is an exotic community created by Pueblo Indians, Hispanic colonists, mountain men, and later artists and writers. Nearby is the Taos Pueblo; site of an ancient and historic old pueblo, unique in its multi-storied design, and framed by the sacred Taos Mountains. Ibis tour takes the high road to Taos which will pass through the village of Chimayo and the Santuario de Chimayo, known for centuries by the Indians arid Spanish colonists as a healing ground. The tour continues through the mountain communities of Truchas and Las Trampas, both serving as former guardians to strategic passes. At the entrance to El Rancho de Taos stands the St. Francis de Assisi church. The St. Francis has been highlighted in paintings and photographs by such notables as Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams.
